The first thing I noticed while researching the vegan Austrian community was that the good people of Austria have a sweet-tooth. No doubt. In 10 recipes, 8 are deserts. And bless them for that.
Here’s another sweet desert. A sugar-free caramel desert. Check out the recipe.
And cinnamon rolls. One can’t go far in Europe without finding a Cinnamon roll. And this vegan take on the classic roll is delish. Certainly not sugar-free. But why would anyone make a sugar-free cinnamon roll? The vegan butter? I tried this recipe with own homemade vegan butter – the recipe I use is here. Whichever vegan butter you select, please avoid any brand that uses palm oil.
Of course, there’s more to vegan Austrian cuisine than deserts. In the Austrian Alps, to keep warm, locals need their hearty meals. And so, Vegan Austrians select big, hearty bowls like this vegan Chili sin carne recipe…
…or a great, big wholesome vegan pasta dish, like Pad Thai.
Austria is famous for its organic cheese from the Alps. But you won’t find a vegan in Austria complianing. Because, vegan Austirans are getting creative and finding vegan cheese alternatives that satisfy any old cheese lover. Check out this vegan food blogger’s site for a Vegan Parmesan recipe.
Like I said, vegan Austrians are getting creative with their plant-based recipes. And this colourful smoothie is a testament to that.
And with so much creativity, the vegan Austrian community grows by the year. Not only among the younger community. But an older generation is also joining in.
One thing that is a constant in the vegan kitchen is the homemade rather than the store-bought. Especially snacks. These fries made from sweet potatoes accompanied by an avocado and cashew dip with vegan cream chives are an example.
To finish off this virtual tour of vegan Austria, there’s soup. In the breezy, cold Alps, there’s soup in every meal. And this colourful, creamy beetroot soup is a treat and a hearty, healthy one too.
